Artist's Comments

This was the series that I created for my Senior Thesis. This is my Artist Statement for the show that pretty much sums up what I was doing.

For my thesis, I created a number of digital pieces that composite photography and digital drawings. The black and white imagery, high contrasts, and heavy textures are primarily used to add drama and tone. They characterize my own tastes in beauty that I wanted to share through these pieces so that if viewers choose to ignore the narrative, they might appreciate the images on a purely aesthetic level.

Inspired by the ancient Greek philosophy of Anamnesis and the psychological studies of Lawrence Kohlberg, I formed a narrative that explores human development and the authority figures that are experienced throughout life. While the series was developed off of explicit ideas, each piece is filled with a number of visual allusions that could be interpreted in a variety of ways. Once described purely through imagery, I invite individuals to ascribe their own understanding of the series. It represents my first exploration into the inclusion of either philosophical or psychological ideas across a series of pieces. Through this process, I am developing my ability to add intellectual depth to my ideas and the content of my work

Right not, I don’t think I see myself as much of a Gallery artist, but it was definitely interesting working on this.

Here is the entire series

Birth
Fear
Desire
Law
Society
Truth
Purity

On Anamnesis:

Socrates' response is to develop his theory of anamnesis. He suggests that the soul is immortal, being repeatedly incarnated; knowledge is actually in the soul from eternity (86b), but each time the soul is incarnated its knowledge is forgotten in the shock of birth. What we think of as learning, then is actually the bringing back of what we'd forgotten.

Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development:

Level 1 (Pre-Conventional)
1. Obedience and punishment orientation
2. Self-interest orientation
( What's in it for me?)

Level 2 (Conventional)
3. Interpersonal accord and conformity
( The good boy/good girl attitude)
4. Authority and social-order maintaining orientation
( Law and order morality)

Level 3 (Post-Conventional)
5. Social contract orientation
6. Universal ethical principles
( Principled conscience)

To help anyone trying follow, the Level 2 stages are combined into a single piece, “Law.”

Not one bad picture. The facial expressions are a bit hit and miss but it's barely noticable. I love this. Especially the torso piece. It's so menacing yet so beautiful. You've done a great job and I've loved this series. Keep up the great work.
